SADE ADU TURNS 60 TODAY

 

She was born Folashade Helen Adu in Ibadan in 1959 to a Lecturer father Adebisi and a British Nurse Anne Hayes. She spent Early life in Nigeria until the age of 4 when her parents separated and Anne moved to Essex England with Sade and her brother Banji.

Sade studies Fashion Design at St Martin’s School of Art and took up modelling in between school. She joined a band PRIDE as a backup singer and went into songwriting partnership with the group’s Guitarist Stuart Matthewman and performed at gigs becoming popular. SMOOTH OPERATOR caught the attention of recording companies.

in 1983, both left PRIDE to start a band called SADE. Keyboardist Andrew Hale, Bassist Paul Denman and Drummer Paul Cook joined them. Her first show at HEAVEN’S NIGHT CLUB left over 1000 audience outside the club.

DIAMOND LIFE became the best selling debut by a female Vocalist and best selling album of all time with International sale of over 6 million copies and stayed at number 1 on music top charts.

PROMISE stayed on the BILLBOARD 200, got multiple Platinum Certification in United States of America and Europe earning the group a Grammy Award for Best New Artiste in 1985. STRONGER THAN PRIDE was released in 1988 and LOVE DELUXE in 1992.

She landed a role in a film  ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS in 1986. LOVERS ROCK a Pop sound was released in 2000 and won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. 2002, She got Award of the ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE (OBE). 2010, SOLDIER OF LOVE  was released and got a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance with vocals. 2018, she did soundtrack FLOWER OF THE UNIVERSE for Disney’s 2018 film A WRINKLE IN TIME.
