STILL ON MOTHERS’ DAY

I remember a touching story told by Mary. It was Mothers’ day celebration. Children were required to present gifts to their mothers. The Church was a kind of small parish that everyone knew each other.

On this particular Mothering Sunday, the children presented gifts to their mothers to the cheering of the congregation. Nobody told Mary anything. Not even her closest neighbor who always dropped her little baby with Mary while she was at work. Either deliberately or by oversight she was the only one who did not know that there were activities lined up for the Mothering Sunday.

Suddenly, she saw children hugging their mothers and presenting gifts to them. She felt vulnerable, as waves of gloominess swept over her. She quickly pushed down the chocking sob that threatened to escape from her throat as the realization hit her like granite! It was as if she should just succumb to death right there. An observant mother, who noticed that her mien had changed, hurriedly beckoned to her daughter to go hug Mary and present her with a gift.

what an awesome woman!

Before the service ended, Mary’s handkerchief was dripping oceans of water from her tears. She went home extremely dejected, gloomier than before she went for service.

She was what society termed as barren, yet she was not barren. Mary was medically fit. Her womb was fertile. Nothing hindered her from conceiving. She had tried all she could to have a baby yet she remained “barren” without embracing the delights of motherhood for ten years!

The marriage ultimately broke up. She went into another marriage. Within a space of four years, she had three children! Her former husband too remarried and had two children!

Today, by twist of providence, her children attend the same school with her ex-husband’s two children.
